Updates to the Santa Fe Street and I-35 Corridor are coming!! The City of Olathe is partnering with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) to bring much needed improvements to this area. These improvements will include a new interchange at Santa Fe and I-35, the extension of Rogers Road north under Santa Fe, along with other significant corridor improvements along Santa Fe from Ridgeview Road through Mur-Len Road.

These improvements are needed to:

Improve existing safety conditions.
Improve existing and future traffic operations at the I-35 ramp terminals and intersections along the Santa Fe corridor.
Accommodate transportation mode choices and active transportation modes over I-35 and along the corridor.

Project Background

2019/2020 – The City conducted a study to establish an overall vision for the Santa Fe Corridor from Ridgeview to Mur-Len.

The study focused on how to:

improve safety
enhance mobility
create economic opportunity

October 2019 – The City hosted a Stakeholder Public Meeting to gather input on the project

November 2019 – City completed a public survey

We received nearly 2,300 responses on uses of Santa Fe.

January 2021 – City Council approved project to move forward with conceptual/preliminary design

June 2021 – Environmental assessment kick-off

April 26, 2022 – I-35 and Santa Fe Corridor Improvements Purpose and Need Public Meeting

March 28, 2023 – I-35 and Santa Fe Corridor Improvements Alternatives Public Meeting

September 14 to October 16, 2023 – I-35 and Santa Fe Corridor Improvements Public Hearing and Comment Period

October 2023 – The Environmental Assessment was revised to address agency and public comments and the FHWA issued a Finding of No Significant Impact for the I-35 and Santa Fe Interchange and Corridor Improvements Project completing the NEPA process.

Proposed Improvements

The City of Olathe and project team has recommended the Single-Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) with corridor improvements as the preferred alternative because it best meets the purpose and need for the corridor. The Environmental Assessment document was revised to address agency and public comments and the FHWA issued a Finding of No Significant Impact for the I-35 and Santa Fe Interchange and Corridor Improvements Project completing the NEPA process. November 2025 Update

November 2025 Update:

In October, it was announced that this project has been awarded a nearly $98 million dollar federal INFRA Grant.
This grant, along with a funding commitment from KDOT, will allow the project to fully move forward through construction.
As part of these funding commitments, the scope of the project has also been increased to include the following:

Auxiliary lanes along I-35 from Santa Fe to 119^th Street
Pavement reconstruction on I-35 from Old 56 to North of 119^th Street
Bridge widening on the Old 56 bridge to allow 2 lanes of traffic to merge on to northbound I-35

October 31 Update

April 5 Update

Currently, the City of Olathe is beginning the NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act of 1969) process for the project and conducting an Environmental Assessment (EA) to review improvements alternatives. This is a required process for all projects that may involve federal funding. This process will valuate potential impacts to the natural and man made environments. This process is expected to by completed by the summer of 2023.

Public Meetings

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and the City of Olathe hosted a public meeting on April 30, 2024 for the public to learn more about the I-35 and Santa Fe Corridor Improvements. KDOT and the City, with approval from the Federal Highway Administration, are currently moving forward with engineering design and the right-of-way acquisition process. The project strives to enhance safety, mobility, and congestion for the traveling public. The purpose of the meeting is to provide a project overview, present the identified improvements and proposed schedule, and gather input.

Public Meeting - Spring 2024

The City of Olathe, Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) hosted a public hearing and public comment period from August 30 to October 16, 2023 to provide the public the opportunity to comment on the I-35 & Santa Fe Corridor Improvements Project and the identified Preferred Alternative. An in-person meeting was held on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Indian Creek Library, 16100 W. 135th St. Olathe, KS 66062. A virtual option was also available.
