• Yard waste should be placed within eight feet of the curb before 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day (same as trash collection). Yard waste is collected separately from trash and is taken to the Olathe Community Recycling Center.
• Grass clippings, leaves and small plant trimmings must be placed in compostable paper yard waste bags or a 95-gallon green City Yard Cart (see below for more information). Plastic bags are prohibited.
• Limbs and brush must be:
  • Less than four inches in diameter
  • Less than four feet in length
  • Securely tied in bundles with string or twine weighing less than 50 pounds
• Yard waste collection is only available for residential customers.
• Sod, soil/dirt, landscaping rock and treated lumber (including fence posts, landscaping timbers, wood pallets, etc.) are prohibited.
• Holiday trees being recycled must have plastic bags, ornaments, tinsel and lights removed.
• Limbs and brush larger than four inches in diameter and four feet in length can be dropped off at the Olathe Community Recycling Center or can be picked up by scheduling a bulk waste pick-up.

Yard waste can be dropped off at the Olathe Community Recycling Center during operating hours. The Community Recycling Center also offers free compost and mulch for Olathe residents, as well as recycling dumpsters and a food waste compost drop-off kiosk.

Throwing away grass clippings is a big waste. Grass clippings contain valuable nitrogen that naturally feeds a lawn or provides great nutrients in compost. Grass should be mowed two to three inches in height and should only remove about a third of the blade height every five days. Mulching is the best way to dispose of grass clippings. Mowing higher also helps protect the roots from heat, making lawns more drought tolerant.
