Ridgeview, 143rd to 151st Improvement Project
Before beginning the design for this project, the City completed a traffic study on this corridor to gather data on existing conditions. Currently, Ridgeview Road is at the upper threshold of the capacity of a two-lane street. During peak traffic times, there are few gaps in the flow of through traffic on Ridgeview Road, which leads to long delays for drivers on the side streets who are exiting the residential neighborhoods. The lack of left-turn lanes along this section of Ridgeview Road has resulted in a number of rear end crashes, as drivers block the through lanes while waiting to turn left. Overall, the crash rate for this section of Ridgeview Road is more than five times higher than the statewide average for similar types of streets.
The Ridgeview Road, 143rd to 151st, Improvements project will widen the existing roadway from its current two-lane section to a three-lane section, with the center lane being a dedicated two-way left turn lane. Additionally, two roundabouts will be constructed at the intersection of Ridgeview Road and Sheridan Bridge Lane and at the intersection of Ridgeview Road and Frontier Lane.
The traffic study analyzed the impact of traffic signals at these two intersections, but ultimately the roundabouts provide shorter traffic queues on both the side streets and Ridgeview Road. These traffic improvements, along with the construction of Mahaffie Street to the west (to be completed in 2020), will accommodate both current and future traffic flows.
In addition to the roadway improvements, this project will include:
- Five-foot wide bike lanes
- Five-foot wide sidewalk along the west side of the roadway (existing sidewalk is four feet)
- Eight-foot wide shared use path along the east side of the roadway (existing sidewalk is four feet)
November 10 Update
The contractor has completed the installation of the asphalt surface on this project. Ridgeview Road will be reopened to local traffic during non-working hours (5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.) starting on November 14th from 143rd Street to 151st Street. Northbound exit from the Indian Trail/Garmin traffic signal will also be allowed between 3:00 p.m. and 3:40 p.m. to assist with school traffic flows. Northbound traffic during this specific time period will be detoured to Sheridan Bridge Lane. Northbound Ridgeview Road can then be accessed via Wells Fargo Drive or Stagecoach Drive. During working hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), local traffic should continue to use the existing detour to Lindenwood Drive for southbound access to 151st Street. Ridgeview Road is anticipated to be fully reopened to all traffic (local and through traffic) by the end of 2021. Click this link for a map depicting the information above.
The stamped concrete medians and center island at the Sheridan Bridge Lane roundabout are anticipated to be completed prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. This work will be followed by construction of the new sidewalks and street light installation in the Phase 2 area (Sleepy Hollow Drive to Indian Trail/Garmin traffic signal), expected to be completed along with final sod restoration by the end of 2021.
October 25 Update
The first layers of asphalt have been installed in the Phase 2 area (Sheridan Bridge Lane to Indian Trail/Garmin traffic signal). The new curb and gutter is scheduled to be installed in this area on October 27th and 28th, weather permitting. This will be followed by the additional asphalt layers and the median curbs for the new roundabout at Sheridan Bridge Lane. Unfortunately due to rain the week of October 11th and rain anticipated the week of October 25th, the reopening of this section of roadway to traffic has been delayed by two weeks to November 13th. The roadwork will be followed by the new sidewalks and then street lights and yard restoration.
The Phase 1 area (north of Sleepy Hollow Drive) is being prepped for sod to be installed this week and the week of November 1st. Street light installation will follow the sod installation in this area.
September 30 Update
Ridgeview Road has been reopened to northbound traffic to the roundabout at 143rd/Sheridan Street. The southbound exit from the roundabout will continue to be closed until Ridgeview is reopened to traffic north of 151st. This is to prevent added non-local traffic from traveling down Ridgeview and through the residential neighborhoods.
The contractor will be pouring the remaining sidewalks between Sleepy Hollow Drive and 143rd/Sheridan Street the week of October 4. The sidewalks will be followed by final grading and sod installation. The final 2” of asphalt will be installed in a few weeks at the same time as the base asphalt is installed in the Phase 2 area (Sheridan Bridge Lane and the Indian Trails Middle School/Garmin traffic signal). The new stormwater pipe crossings have been installed in the Phase 2 area and the removal of the existing roadway and installation of the base rock layer will occur the week of October 4.
During the week of October 4 through October 9, the Brittany Place subdivision entrance at Sheridan Bridge Lane and Ridgeview will be closed during working hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) while the existing asphalt is removed and the base rock layer for the new roadway and roundabout is installed. Following this week, access will be restored to this entrance for the remainder of the roadway work except for occasional short-term closures during work hours for asphalt installation. During these times, Brittany Place residents will need to exit onto Ridgeview via Frontier Lane by following Sheridan Bridge Lane or Meadow Lane to Sunset Drive (connection between Brittany Place and Mission Ridge). From there, residents can travel north to Frontier Lane and then east to Ridgeview Road. View a detour map showing this information.
September 21 Update
The closure of the Brittany Place subdivision entrance at Sheridan Bridge Lane and Ridgeview has been rescheduled to the week of October 4 through October 9. The entrance will be closed during working hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), while the existing asphalt is removed and the base rock layer for the new roadway and roundabout is installed.
September 14 Update
Beginning Monday, Sept. 27, Ridgeview Road will be closed to all traffic between Sheridan Bridge Lane and the traffic signal at the Garmin/Indian Trail Middle School entrances to allow for reconstruction work on this section of Ridgeview Road and the construction of the roundabout at Sheridan Bridge Lane. Most of the utility work within this section of the project is complete and because of this, reconstruction of this portion of Ridgeview Road is anticipated to be completed by the end of October. At that point, the roadway will reopen to traffic. Residents, churches, and businesses located north of this closure will need to use Lindenwood Drive to access 151st Street during this time. Please refer to the attached local detour map. The traffic signal at the Garmin/Indian Trail Middle School entrance will remain open in the east, west, and south directions during this work.
Prior to this roadway work, Ridgeview Road will be reopened to local traffic only from Sleepy Hollow Drive to Cambridge Street. Ridgeview Road at Sheridan Street (south leg of existing roundabout) will remain closed to through traffic, so local traffic will need to continue to use Clairborne Road to access Sheridan/143rd Street.
During the week of September 27 through October 2, the Brittany Place subdivision entrance at Sheridan Bridge Lane and Ridgeview will close during working hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) while the existing asphalt is removed and the base rock layer for the new roadway and roundabout is installed. Following this week, access will be restored to this entrance for the remainder of the roadway work, except for occasional short-term closures during work hours for asphalt installation. During these times, Brittany Place residents need to exit onto Ridgeview via Frontier Lane by following Sheridan Bridge Lane or Meadow Lane to Sunset Drive (connection between Brittany Place and Mission Ridge).
September 2 Update
Rainfall on Monday, Aug. 31, shut down paving crews for the project. Contractors spent Tuesday, Sept. 1, cleaning the asphalt in preparation for the next layer of asphalt to be installed between Stagecoach Drive and Sleepy Hollow Drive on Thursday, Sept. 2. Because of this, curb installation has been pushed back to Tuesday, Sept. 7, and Wednesday, Sept 8.
August 27 Update
Unfortunately, the large rain we received two weeks ago followed by the rain last Friday delayed the installation of the asphalt on Ridgeview between Stagecoach Drive and Sleepy Hollow Drive as we waited for the base rock layer to sufficiently harden. However, the construction crews were able to test the rock layer again determined they can begin installing asphalt on Monday, Aug. 30. Installation will last through Wednesday, Sept. 1, followed by the new curb and gutter on Wednesday, Sept. 1 and Thursday, Sept. 2.
For those residents immediately adjacent to Ridgeview whose driveways have been affected, please move any vehicles that you will need access to from your driveway to the street until your new driveway has been completed. You can park on the new asphalt at this time. The new driveways will be poured over the next few days after the curb is installed, likely beginning on Friday, Sept. 3, and continuing through Tuesday, Sept. 7. After the driveways are poured, they typically need five days to cure before they can be driven on again.
As the above work is being completed, crews will also be working to install the new sidewalks and street lighting. This work will be followed by final grading and placement of new sod. Completion of the Phase 1 improvements (Sheridan/143rd Street to Sleepy Hollow Drive) should occur by the end of September. As soon as Phase 1 has been fully re-opened for traffic, the contractor will begin Phase 2, including the removal of the roadway between Sleepy Hollow Drive and the Garmin/Indian Trail Middle School traffic signal. The Phase 2 roadway improvements are expected to begin in late September with the new asphalt in place by the end of October. During this time, residents wanting to travel southbound will be detoured east to Lindenwood Drive and south to 151st Street. The Garmin/Indian Trail Middle School traffic signal will remain open throughout the duration of the Phase 2 improvements, so students and staff will continue to be able to access this entrance from 151st Street. A detour map will be provided closer to the time this work is to begin.
August 12 Update
Beginning on Thursday, August 12th, Sleepy Hollow Drive will be closed at Ridgeview Road to prepare for the reconstruction of this intersection. Residents on Sleepy Hollow Drive east of Ridgeview will need to travel east on Sleepy Hollow Drive to Wells Fargo Drive and then south to Sheridan Bridge Lane to access southbound Ridgeview Road. Sleepy Hollow will remain closed at Ridgeview Road until the asphalt work is completed with the rest of the roadway improvements on the current phase of the project.
July 27 Update
The contractor has begun placing the base layers of asphalt on Ridgeview Road between 143rd Street and Sunvale Terrace. The remainder of the stormwater piping is expected to be completed between Butterfield Place and Sleepy Hollow Drive by Friday, Aug. 6. Once this is completed, the contractor will begin placing the base rock between Sunvale Terrace and Sleepy Hollow Drive. This work will be followed immediately by the base asphalt in this area, expected to be installed the week of Monday, Aug. 16. The installation of the new curb, driveway entrances and sidewalks will follow behind the asphalt placement along with the new street lights. The contractor still expects to complete the improvements within Phase 1 (143rd to Sleepy Hollow Drive) by the end of September.
Please note that beginning on Monday, Aug. 2, the Frontier Drive and Ridgeview Road intersection will be closed until the completion of the roundabout construction at this location. During this time, Mission Ridge residents wishing to travel northbound on Ridgeview Road will need to use Hunter Drive to exit onto Ridgeview Road via Butterfield Place. Mission Ridge residents wishing to travel southbound on Ridgeview Road will need to use Sunset Drive to exit onto Ridgeview Road via Sheridan Bridge Lane. Local traffic should use the posted detour during this time.
July 12 Update
The closings of the Mission Ridge entrances at Butterfield Place and Frontier Drive have been delayed by one week. Revised information regarding these closures is as follows:
On Tuesday, July 20th, the contractor will be installing new stormwater piping across the Butterfield Place intersection along the west side of Ridgeview Road. During this time, the Butterfield Place entrance to Mission Ridge will be closed. This closure is expected to last 2 to 3 hours and will occur between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Once the pipe has been installed, the entrance will be reopened. During the closure, Mission Ridge residents can access Ridgeview Road via Frontier Lane. On Wednesday, July 21st, the contractor will be installing new stormwater piping across the Frontier Lane intersection along the west side of Ridgeview Road. During the closure, Mission Ridge residents can access Ridgeview Road via Butterfield Place.
The contractor will begin grading on the new roadway between Sheridan St and Sunvale Terrace beginning on Wednesday, July 14th. It is anticipated that the new stormwater piping will be complete for Phase 1 (Sheridan St to Sleepy Hollow Dr) within the next the next two weeks with road grading and pavement to follow immediately after. Base asphalt for Phase 1 is currently scheduled to be in place by August 13th. Phase 1 is currently scheduled to be completed by the end of September. All improvements (Phase 1 and 2) will be completed by the end of the year 2021.
Beginning on Tuesday, July 13th, the west entrance to the Indian Trails Middle School/Olathe South High School at the traffic signal will be closed for stormwater pipe replacement and entrance reconstruction. This work is anticipated to be completed by July 23rd. During this time, Ridgeview Road between this traffic signal and Meadow Lane will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
July 9 Update
On Tuesday, July 13, the contractor will be installing new stormwater piping across the Butterfield Place intersection along the west side of Ridgeview Road. During this time, the Butterfield Place entrance to Mission Ridge will be closed. This closure is expected to last 2 to 3 hours and will occur between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Once the pipe has been installed, the entrance will be reopened. During the closure, Mission Ridge residents can access Ridgeview Road via Frontier Lane.
On Wednesday, July 14, the contractor will be installing new stormwater piping across the Frontier Lane intersection along the west side of Ridgeview Road. July 6 Update
Over the past few weeks, the contractor was able to complete the majority of the final waterline connections on Ridgeview Road. Replacement of the existing stormwater piping has also been completed between Sheridan Street and Sunvale Drive.
Over the next few weeks, construction crews will be installing new stormwater piping between Sunvale Terrace and Sleepy Hollow Drive. Traffic control will remain mostly unchanged during this time, and notices will be sent out if any detour routing changes must be made to complete this work. Beginning in Mid-July, the contractor will start the reconstruction of the roadway between Sheridan Street and Sleepy Hollow Drive, along with the construction of the roundabout at Frontier Lane. Specific detour routes for these areas will be provided in the coming weeks.
May 21 Update
While weather has slowed construction efforts this past week, construction crews continue to make progress on the final waterline testing work and preparations for final connections. City and contractor crews will be flushing water out of fire hydrants along Ridgeview Road.
Beginning on Friday, May 21, an additional section of Ridgeview Road will be closed between Butterfield Place and Frontier Drive. Mission Ridge residents wishing to travel north to 143rd Street will need to use the Butterfield Place entrance or follow Frontier Drive east across Ridgeview and then use Stagecoach Drive, Winterbrooke Drive, or Lindenwood Drive to continue north. Residents of the Butterfield Place cul-de-sac can continue to travel north to Sunvale Terrace or can travel south by following Stagecoach Drive to Sheridan Bridge Lane. Please follow the posted detour.
May 10 Update
Construction crews have completed the waterline and stormwater connection work at the Sheridan St./Ridgeview Rd. roundabout and the roundabout has been reopened to eastbound traffic on Sheridan St.
Over the next two weeks, the contractor will be completing final testing on the new waterline and will be flushing fire hydrants along Ridgeview Rd. To complete this task, there will be several waterline shutoffs on Ridgeview Rd. between Sleepy Hollow and Sheridan St./143rd St. Residents will receive notification at least two days prior to any water shutoffs affecting their home.
If you have a need for water during a shutoff, please notify Aaron Wasko at 913-971-9108 or at AMWasko@OlatheKS.org and bottled water can be delivered to your home.

April 23 Update
Crews are close to completing the installation of the main waterline along Ridgeview Rd.
Starting Monday, April 26, side streets will be prepared for final waterline connections to begin the first week of May. During the final waterline connections, crews will need to shut off water to portions of the neighborhood while the work is being done. Each connection will be completed within a working day. Impacted homes will be notified at least two days in advance of any water shutoffs. Most shutoffs will last approximately four hours but could last up to eight hours if problems arise during the connection work. If you have a need, drinking water can be provided during these shutoffs. Please contact Aaron Wasko (contact info below) when you receive the shutoff notice and he will coordinate delivery of water.
Upon completion of the waterline improvements, construction will shift to installation of new stormwater piping, tentatively expected to begin mid-May. Traffic control updates will be provided as the contractor moves from one end of the project to the other.
To help expedite the roadway improvements, the contractor began removing some existing pavement within phase one of the project. Existing detour routes and access will continue during these operations. The City requires the contractor to maintain ramp transitions into and out of these areas.
Thank you for your patience as we continue with the construction of this important street improvements project.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Aaron Wasko, City of Olathe Project Manager, at 913-971-9108 or at AMWasko@OlatheKS.org.
