In an effort to provide clarity with members of our community, the Olathe Police Department has posted responses to eight questions we are commonly asked about the use of force our officers exhibit during critical incidents. These responses are posted below and are provided to assure our community that we are dedicated to transparency and positive community relationships.

Are chokeholds and strangleholds allowed?
Are Olathe police officers trained in de-escalation?
Are officers required to issue a warning before using deadly force?
Are officers required to exhaust all other means before using deadly force?
Do Olathe police officers have a duty to intercede?
What is the Olathe Police Department's policy regarding shooting at moving vehicles?
What is the Olathe Police Department's "use of force" policy?
Are use of force incidents reported?

The Olathe Police Department takes complaints of racially biased policing very seriously and encourages the community to report their concerns to the Olathe Police Department and/or our community partners such as the NAACP, ACLU, or the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Kansas. We appreciate the public’s continued partnership in assisting with our mission to prevent, reduce and solve crime.
