Are your smoke alarms chirping?

  • Your smoke alarms may have low batteries, or
  • Your smoke alarms may need replaced—older than 10 years of age.

Smoke Alarm Locations

The type and location of smoke alarms depend upon when your home was built. We recommend smoke alarms:

  • On every level of your home, including the basement;
  • Immediately outside all sleeping areas; and,
  • Inside each sleeping room.

Smoke rises! Put smoke alarms on the ceiling or high on the wall. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the best smoke alarm placement.

Smoke Alarm Maintenance

  • Test smoke alarms every month and replace 9-volt smoke alarm batteries at least once every year.
  • Vacuum or dust smoke alarms regularly to keep them working properly.
  • Follow all manufacturer’s recommendations.

Smoke Alarm Replacement

  • Replace any smoke alarm that is 10 years of age or older based upon the manufacture date.
  • Follow all manufacturer's recommendations.

Landlord/Tenant Obligations

  • Landlords are required by law to provide working smoke alarms at the time a tenant moves into a rental property.
  • Tenants must keep smoke alarms in working order, including changing batteries.
