Scheduling City Council Meetings

After Councilmembers take their seats in January, following the General Election in November, the City Council:

  • Establishes a regular schedule of meeting times and dates for the next two years.
  • No less than two meetings are scheduled each month.
  • Elects one of the Councilmembers as Mayor Pro Tem to serve in the absence or disability of the elected Mayor.

City Council Meeting Format

The City Council Meeting Agenda follows the format below:

  • Call to Order - The meeting is called to order by the Mayor or Mayor Pro Tem acting in the Mayor's absence.
  • Pledge of Allegiance - The audience is invited to join Councilmembers in the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • Special Business - Presentations are made for guests, awards, board appointments or proclamations.
  • Public Hearing - By law, some issues require the opportunity for citizen input. Citizens are encouraged to state their support or concern(s) about an issue.
  • Consent Agenda - These routine items generally include: renewal of commercial licenses, acceptance of bids for equipment purchase, approval of development plans, award of contracts and approval of agreements.  They are considered and approved under one motion unless removed for separate action at the request of the City Council.
  • New Business - These items have not been previously considered by the Council. Each item is discussed, if needed, and voted on separately. New Business may typically be presented in three categories:  planning, public works, and administration.
  • New City Council Business - Each Councilmember and the City Manager have an opportunity to voice additional concerns and issues.
  • General Issues and Concerns of Citizens - After the City Council completes the meeting agenda items above, citizens can address the City Council about other issues.
  • City Council and City Manager Calendar and Review Items
  • Meeting Adjournment
