Today is the day! We are looking forward to harvesting the sorghum and boiling it down to make molasses. Wear your work boots and jeans because you have the chance to get in the fields with the Mahaffie staff and volunteers during this event. Help cut stalks of sorghum, feed the stalks through a press to make sap, and haul the sap to the outdoor fire to be boiled into molasses. Maybe you can sweet-talk the cook into giving you a taste of the finished product. Yum!
While you're on the farm, take a tour of the historic home, see Mrs. Mahaffie's cookstove in action, ride the stagecoach, meet the farm animals, and learn a bit about blacksmithing, too.
We're open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for kids ages 5 to 11 and free for kids ages 4 & under. Olathe residents receive $2 off admission. Mahaffie members are free.
