Neck Tie Workshop

Re-create your own 19th century men's neck tie

Whether working on the farm or going out on the town, neckwear was an essential part of a 19th century man’s daily wardrobe. This sewing workshop will give participants the opportunity to recreate a 19th Century neck tie for themselves, choosing between two different styles, each copied directly from original men’s ties within the Merchant Tailor Museum collection. In addition, an array of original 19th century neckwear including detachable collars, cravats, neck stocks, ties, and shirts, will be on display and available for visitors to examine throughout and after the workshop. Registered participants will receive all the required materials, pre-cut with instructions, just as many ready-made clothing manufactories prepared them for assembly in the mid-19th century. This is a beginner level sewing project that almost anyone could learn to make, regardless of one’s skill level. All the necessary tools will be provided for the workshop, but free to bring your own hand sewing needles, scissors, measuring instruments, or electric iron from home if you’re more comfortable using your own tools.

Register for $30, Mahaffie members receive a $5 discount.
